AWS HealthImaging features

AWS HealthImaging is a new HIPAA-eligible service that helps healthcare and life science organizations and their software partners to store, analyze, and share medical imaging data at petabyte scale. With HealthImaging, you can reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of your medical imaging applications up to 40% by running your medical imaging applications from a single copy of patient imaging data in the cloud. With subsecond image retrieval latencies for active and archive data, you can realize the cost savings of the cloud without sacrificing performance at the point of care. HealthImaging removes the burden of managing infrastructure for your imaging workflows so that you can focus on delivering quality patient care.

HealthImaging simplifies application development by returning DICOM metadata in a developer-friendly format. Individual attributes are accessible using human-readable keywords rather than unfamiliar group and element hexadecimal numbers. Patient and study attributes are normalized, removing the need for application developers to deal with inconsistencies between SOP instances.

HealthImaging returns images encoded using High-Throughput JPEG 2000 (HTJ2K)—a state-of-the-art codec ideal for medical imaging. HTJ2K takes advantage of single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instructions on modern processors to deliver new levels of performance. HTJ2K decodes images an order of magnitude faster than JPEG 2000 and is at least twice as fast as all other DICOM transfer syntaxes. WASM SIMD can be utilized to bring this extreme speed to zero-footprint web viewers.

HealthImaging sets a new standard for image loading performance thanks to its efficient metadata encoding, lossless compression, and progressive resolution data access. Efficient metadata encoding enables image viewers and AI algorithms to understand the contents of a DICOM study without having to load the image data. Images load faster without any compromise in quality due to state-of-the-art image compression.

HealthImaging import processes use modern cloud-native technologies capable of ingesting many DICOM studies in parallel. Historical archives can be quickly ingested without impacting clinical workloads for new data.
