Sustainability and the City: How Torino Is Using Satellites and AWS AI to Improve Quality of Life with Nature-Based Solutions

"We can deliver solutions in areas where they’re needed most in our city. It’s a great example of how satellite technologies can make a huge contribution to cities’ sustainability and resilience to climate change.”

— Laura Ribotta, Municipal Technical Officer, City of Torino

Working with satellite and artificial intelligence (AI) technology firm Latitudo 40 and in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the team at Torino used an innovative approach to understand how it could make its city, and the communities within it, more sustainable. Together, they created an application to give Torino data-driven insight into where to deploy nature-based solutions.
Laura Ribotta, municipal technical officer for the city of Torino, explains, “We used the 3-30-300 rule. This means if you can see 3 trees out of your window, have 30 percent of tree coverage in your neighborhood, and can reach a green area in less than 300 meters, you have good quality of life.”

Harnessing Satellite Tech and AI to Enrich the Environment

Using AWS AI applied to vast volumes of satellite data, Latitudo 40 helped Ribotta and her team assess the environmental needs of citizens in different areas of the city. With the indicators of urban sustainability that the app provides, they can decide where to focus their green initiatives.
“Having the chance to work with our tech on AWS gave us the opportunity to provide the city of Torino with the right analysis about nature-based solutions at the right moment, as quickly as possible,” says Mauro Manente, co-founder and chief operating officer, Latitudo 40.

Ribotta adds, “Thanks to Latitudo 40’s analysis, we better understand the life quality of our citizens in connection with nature. This means we can deliver solutions in areas where they’re needed most in our city. It’s a great example of how satellite technologies can make a huge contribution to cities’ sustainability and resilience to climate change.”

Capturing the Spirit of Sustainability

The collaboration between Torino, Latitudo 40, and AWS is making a big difference to the communities across Torino. By putting nature at the heart of its solutions, as Ribotta says, the city is seeing a positive effect in social, economic, and ecological terms. It has brought people together from all sections of local communities to design and build spaces that not only improve citizens’ lives, but also create “a meeting point in the spirit of the New European Bauhaus initiative,” as Ribotta concludes.
