EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance
Scales to handle 2 million job-candidate matches

Overview
HeyJobs is a recruitment technology company founded in 2016 to address the challenge of recruiting talent in a tightening job market. The Berlin-based firm saw Germany was losing 500,000 workers per year, because older workers of the baby boom generation were retiring. Today German businesses struggle to acquire talent, the cost-per-hire is increasing, and many companies across Europe see labor shortage as a leading concern for growth.
The company aims to become the trustworthy career advisor for talent in Europe and simplify the job application process. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to create better, more accurate, matches between job-seekers and open positions. It quickly provides employers with high-quality candidates and helps job-seekers connect with the jobs they want most. The HeyJobs talent platform is used by hundreds of thousands of job-seekers, as well as more than 2,700 employers ranging from subject matter experts (SMEs) to the largest European employers. Its customers have hired more than 100,000 people to date using HeyJobs.
AWS frees us to innovate—not spend time just maintaining existing features. It’s the industry standard with well-integrated services and good account management support. And, like us, AWS is always innovating.”

HeyJobs Innovates, Simplifies IT Operations, and Reduces Infrastructure Costs by 30%
Using AWS, the company can scale compute capacity for its talent acquisition platform up and down in response to customer demand, even multiple times during a day. HeyJobs has also reduced the complexity of its IT operations and cut infrastructure costs by 30 percent because on AWS it pays only for the compute resources it uses and eliminates hardware purchase and maintenance costs.
HeyJobs sets itself apart from its competitors by using AI and ML running on AWS to learn from the rich data collected on candidates during the hiring processes. The company uses a personalized application and assessment flow based on information provided by jobseekers when registering and in their profiles. Details on everything from preferred shifts and specialized skills to additional qualifications helps to improve matching. The platform can deliver 2-3 times as many matches to an employer in the same time period, compared to similar services, improving the hiring process and reducing the cost-per-hire.
The process is also improved by hiring companies refining their needs and preferences. This helps employers recruit skilled workers at scale and in a simplified way while ensuring data consistency, quality, and availability. The system identifies qualified talent so it can better match candidates in different professions to the right job and employer.
HeyJobs chose Amazon Web Services (AWS) after it found that using a fragmented set of tools from its previous providers impeded growth. “AWS frees us to innovate—not spend time just maintaining existing features,” says Boris Diebold, chief technology officer (CTO) at HeyJobs. “It’s the industry standard with well-integrated services and good account management support. And, like us, AWS is always innovating.” HeyJobs has grown as a business—it now has a staff of more than 300 operating in Germany and Austria—and improve life for job-seekers, using AWS. “We are proud of the way we help companies to hire better candidates and do it cost effectively,” says Diebold. “But what really moves me is that we changed the lives of so many people, helping them find great opportunities. In 2021, we were responsible for around 1 percent of all German hires. And while this is nice proof of our relevance, it still feels like day one in terms of the long-term value we can create.”
Data and Machine Learning Refine Searches Benefiting All
To develop this capability, HeyJobs uses Amazon Redshift, which accelerates time to insights with fast, easy, and secure cloud data warehousing at scale, and Amazon SageMaker, which it uses to build, train, and deploy ML models. These help HeyJobs scale to support future projects and initiatives that take advantage of AI and ML.
The company uses its unique data set and proprietary ML and AI algorithms to find the best person, whether a lorry driver, nurse, or electrician, for every position. “Whilst 5 years ago, we could differentiate between a nurse and a driver, our AI has now learned to identify who is a qualified intensive care unit nurse that seeks to work three night shifts”, says Marius Luther, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of HeyJobs. “That greater insight is what lets us find the right talent and match it to the right job. Those essential workers—30 million in Germany, over 200 million in Europe—benefit, the companies benefit, and society benefits.”
HeyJobs was also able to meet auditor compliance targets that were important for raising funds from investors. For this, it used AWS Well-Architected, which helps cloud architects build secure, high-performing, resilient, and efficient infrastructure. The company has recently raised €43 million Series B funding that it will use to develop its use of AI in talent acquisition and support further growth.
HeyJobs is now well-positioned to advance its ambitions. “The growth we’ve had in the last 2 years, even with the pandemic, has been amazing,” says Diebold. “We’re now looking to improve job-seekers’ experience on our talent platform, and to expand into other parts of Europe. Using AWS we can innovate faster to achieve our goals. AWS is the right provider for us.”
