If it had been on premises, it could have easily taken an hour or more [to discover the issue]. Using N2WS Cloud Protection Manager, it took five minutes.
The University of Notre Dame is a 176-year-old private research institution and one of the top religiously affiliated schools in the U.S. The university’s Office of Information Technologies (OIT) supports a cloud-first strategy, running critical systems such as the university website and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Specifically, the school runs its systems on more than 700 Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances and four Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) instances, and it hosts sensitive workloads on AWS GovCloud (US) to address regulatory compliance requirements.
OIT needed to ensure its systems would remain up and running for 12,000 students, 6,000 employees, and 240 IT staff, even in the event of an emergency. To make this happen, OIT implemented N2WS Cloud Protection Manager, a backup solution available for procurement in AWS Marketplace. Cloud Protection Manager restores Amazon EC2 instances in seconds by recovering snapshots stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).
Using N2WS from AWS Marketplace, Notre Dame is better protected from outages, and it saves up to 25 percent of the time previously spent performing manual data backups. Recently, the OIT applications team rolled out a patch on a production server only to discover an issue two weeks later. Engineers easily located the issue by simply looking at the snapshot’s description on the console. “If it had been on premises, it could have easily taken an hour or more,” says Aaron Wright, systems engineer at the University of Notre Dame. “Using N2WS Cloud Protection Manager, it took five minutes.”
The university can now spend more time implementing its cloud-first strategy. Notre Dame can also focus more on application performance, enabling students and faculty to focus entirely on their educational experience.
N2WS (a Veeam company) provides backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions for Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Aurora, and DynamoDB.
