AWS Storage Gateway customers

AWS Storage Gateway helped us address the load and network constraints we had, which were preventing us from getting backups done. We realized quickly that using Volume Gateway and Amazon EBS Snapshots was an effective way to get the data robustly into AWS. It was a simple way of doing the migration that worked with our database team’s existing processes and knowledge.

The reason we moved to AWS was the unreliability of physical tape. It's about 65% cheaper now storing the data up in AWS. All I do now literally is go into the [AWS] console, add in tapes, and eject tapes and I'm done. It made my job a lot easier.

Bristol Myers Squibb has been using Amazon S3 and Storage Gateway for years, moving hundreds of terabytes of scientific data from our local premises to the AWS Cloud, daily. We have found AWS services to be efficient, reliable, and cost-effective, often bringing in more flexibility and scalability while reducing our dependency on hardware infrastructure. For many use cases at Bristol Myers Squibb, we rely on AWS Storage Gateway’s File Gateway as the main engine for raw data transfer from scientific instruments to S3 cloud storage. The data resides and is processed in Amazon S3 where other applications in AWS can be accessed across multiple Regions. Upon testing AWS Storage Gateway in our testing environment, we found ways to be cost-effective and highly performant.

With Gritstone's Cloud-Right approach, AWS Storage Gateway was the perfect solution for us as we looked for storage solutions to support GxP and R&D operations. Storage Gateway provides us with real-time data transfer to the cloud using industry standard protocols. It eliminates both our need for additional on-premises storage investment as well as the capital cost of storage and operational expenses typically associated with scale-out storage systems. The real-time data transfer reduces the turnaround time for patient results, enabling us to identify tumor antigens and manufacture personalized immunotherapies faster. Storage Gateway allows us to utilize our current VMware infrastructure investment with a small storage footprint for local caching. With Storage Gateway, we can infinitely scale the amount of data storage to Amazon S3 while leveraging lifecycle policies to tier it into Amazon S3 Glacier as needed. We currently transfer up to 1.5 TB a day to Amazon S3 and can scale horizontally with additional Storage Gateways as we add more sequencers and various other equipment to our labs.

Tapes are a headache, prone to hardware failures, offsite storage costs, and constant maintenance needs. AWS Storage Gateway provided the most cost-effective and simple alternative. We even got disaster recovery by using a bi-coastal data center.

We at FORMULA 1 used both AWS DataSync and AWS Storage Gateway services to provide disaster recovery for on-premises data. With AWS Storage Gateway, we were able to move tape backups to the cloud, allowing us to improve the management of tapes and backup jobs. Most importantly, we were able to reduce physical tape infrastructure in addition to limiting the need for third-party maintenance. Using AWS Storage Gateway, we were able to automate the creation of tapes, along with automating adding and removing tapes in our physical tape library. Our implemented solution frees up a substantial amount of our service desk team’s time to focus on important user tickets. Along with automating tape management, we were able to reduce recovery times from 5-7 days to just 1 day.

AWS Storage Gateway enabled hundreds of our in-store users to easily upload data from product vendors directly into Amazon S3 so that we could easily perform downstream processing across our supply chain workflow. With File Gateway, we went from managing 500+ IAM users to a single role – vastly reducing our administrative overhead. File Gateway provided a seamless way for our stores to connect to the cloud, making our processes much more efficient so that we can reduce costs and continuously improve the customer experience.

Using our old, traditional backup system, and current system using File Gateway, we had about 90% reduction in cost. This was an amazing savings for us. This obviously went right to the bottom line.

With AWS Storage Gateway, Element Biosciences is able to store vast amounts of research data that is generated on premises, and then process that data in AWS using our cloud-based processing engine. With the AWS File Gateway, we can now unleash the full power of AWS on our instrument data.

We run an extensive IT environment that is constantly growing. With our old backup infrastructure, comprised of large external spinning disks, manual handling, and rotation of USB drives to an offsite vault, we hit our limits with regards to storage size. We found AWS Storage Gateway’s Tape Gateway capability to be the ideal solution for us as it integrates well with our VEEAM backup. The Tape Gateway installation was fast and easy, and we were able to automatically save and archive our entire infrastructure on a weekly basis. All our backups are now stored safely, securely, and in a more efficient and scalable manner. Tape Gateway is the perfect solution for us because after VEEAM ejects the virtual tape, the tape is then offline and inaccessible for anybody with access to our backup servers or VEEAM. With virtual tapes then archived to Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive, we are able to securely and durably store hundreds of terabytes of data at a very low price, allowing us to apply more budget toward business innovation rather than managing tapes. With Tape Gateway, we experienced easy integration, fully automated “offline” backups for peace of mind, no more manual physical transport of USB drives to our vault, direct integration with VEEAM Backup & Replication, and no additional licensing fees for separate VTL software.

It made no sense to keep buying big disk siloes, especially as we opened up new global offices, and now we can recover in the cloud from a snapshot if we ever had to.

Storage Gateway allows us to store backups offsite, create online archives of big files, and easily expand our file servers. With cached volumes, we have the most used files local, and all of the files are stored safely in AWS. We use Storage Gateway whenever we need a quick way to have big storage available.

We do not have to worry about scaling anymore. The scaling issues are taken from us, and we can focus much more on product innovation.

Our infrastructure incorporates a blend of Amazon Web Services, and on-premises servers, so when we looked at replacing our hardware tape libraries with virtual ones, we needed a flexible and dynamic solution. AWS Storage Gateway was a natural choice. Data is encrypted locally before being sent to the cloud, and that adds an extra layer of security. The dedicated and optimized Storage Gateway for mail server backup and recovery is a very nice touch, since it has reduced restore time by approximately 30%. Moreover, AWS' commitment to continual improvement means that our solution is always one step ahead of our needs, giving us one less thing to think about.

As a result of using AWS Storage Gateway and other AWS products, we expect to save approximately 30% in infrastructure costs over the next 3 years and close to 50% in administrative overhead, including server management and backup operations. We reduced the costs and complexities related to legacy on-premises data center management while implementing backup and disaster recovery solutions that protect and store critical data.

As a leading nationwide financial firm, we maintain certain records for a long period, and at the same time, these files need to be recovered very frequently. As our business expanded, it became clear that using on-premises backup processes to store and recover these records was massively inefficient, not scalable, and very costly. Using the AWS Cached Volume Storage Gateway, we can retrieve these records very quickly.

Most of our managed service clients are looking at a cloud-first approach for their new infrastructure and data projects, whether they are a Fortune 500 firm or a startup, but the reality is that they have an existing footprint on-premises that they need to somehow mesh with the cloud. AWS Storage Gateway has given our enterprise clients a fantastic way to connect their on-premises applications and storage to AWS resources. In particular, the gateway’s VTL interface has been a cost-effective tool for our financial services clients to address pressing needs like ransomware mitigation and getting off of physical tape backups for compliance with data retention regulations.

AWS Storage Gateway is at the core of our DR and BCM processes, handling our Co-Located OLTP and OLAP off site data backups, as well as our in-office BCM. It works transparently, in a lights out way, archiving off to a separate AWS account with a simple grandfather-father-son snapshot plan in place.

AWS Storage Gateway further simplifies Amazon S3 integration, enabling Veristor to expand our solution offerings in managed cloud services and customer migrations to cloud. The ability to securely transfer files through the gateway while maintaining native file format and metadata simplifies our operations, allowing us to easily move data from customer environments to multiple AWS services. It is another great tool that AWS has given us to add value to our customers.
