Access Server for AWS delivers the best-of-breed VPN solution for secure remote access, site-to-site VPN and secure SasS access for organizations of all sizes. Our award-winning open-source protocol is the industry standard for accessing private information securely, ensuring safe access to internal data and delivering zero-trust network access.

Access Server for AWS is a self-hosted VPN client software that provides rapid deployment for secure remote access with a built-in web-based user interface for ease of use. Access Server provides an extra layer of security, with end-to-end encryption and granular access control to limit the risk of exposed data for remote users, site-to-site connectivity, or securing SaaS access and IoT devices. Certificate PKI management provides simplified installation and configuration. Additional features include balancing traffic across a cluster of Access Servers with DNS round robin and tunneling only your private traffic, optimizing your network bandwidth and making your environment more secure.

OpenVPN client software accommodates Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and ChromeOS environments. Includes a built-in local authentication system and support for authentication with Active Directory, PAM, LDAP, RADIUS, SAML, and even a custom Python3 authentication module is possible.

Our subscription model is based on the number of concurrent connected devices. The tiered instance type comes in various sizes. The cost for the software subscription for the chosen tier is charged directly through Amazon. This means these instances are subscriptions automatically at launch and are suitable for automated launch and autoscaling scenarios.

Once the server is deployed, the connected devices are limited to the number of connections purchased. If you plan to increase the number of connections within your organization, then you will need to migrate to a new server instance to allow more connections.

    Highlights

OpenVPN Access Server Has Been Solid For Us For 10 Years

    Reviewed on Feb 15, 2025
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
For my team and I, OpenVPN Access Server has been part of our infrastructure for the last 10 years. When we first had a need for a reliable, day to day VPN, we researched and spoke with others in our field looking for recommendations. Unanimously most of the people we spoke with recommended OpenVPN. We were tasked with setting it up for a team of about 15 people and found it easy to roll it out even to those in other physical locations with simple to follow instructions. We integrated it for our entire team in less than 24 hours. We consulted with their customer support on a few questions during the initial setup and they were extremely helpful in ensuring a smooth transition from our old VPN server. Our team uses OpenVPN daily with some of us staying connected 24x7. We found that the feature set was more than enough for us as we only use the typical features that most would. With that said we have the flexibility to use more advanced features if we should need them in the future. When it comes time to renew our licensing, it's as simple as copy and pasting the new licenses code. There's no need for a restart or anything that would compromise our connectivity. We have been extremely happy in the 10 years that we have been using OpenVPN Access Server.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing that has been a challenge for us over the years is that the licensing model has changed. Even with that change, we were willing to pay a little bit more knowing that the OpenVPN Access Server has worked extremely well for us over the last 10 years. After speaking with their team, they helped us through choosing the right model for oour needs and ever since then we just pay the renewal fees, update our license key, and move on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our OpenVPN Server has allowed us to connect our US and internationl teams to the same resources with an easy to use lightweight client. In some cases the international team has slower than normal internet access and even with that the OpenVPN client works well and keeps them connected. A lot of time we are pushing large amounts of code and data from slower connections and the VPN always holds up for us.

What do you dislike about the product?
In Saudi Arabia, OpenVPN site is blocked by Internet provider. This makes it difficult to pay online for the subscription.

Solid, reliable platform with good self service setup for users.

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is great for mobile devices in particular. It's easy to build, configure and manage for a standalone or cluster build. It scales well for user concurrency without requiring heavily resourced servers.
The prebuild AWS instances are very convenient, and the support documenation is excellent.
What do you dislike about the product?
Integration options for enterprise features like posture assessment are weak compared to solutions integrated to enterprise firewalls.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Cloud based automation, QA and remote vendor teams accessing internet facing dev, test and preprod environments. The platform is lightweight enough for qa teams to support remote users accessing limited environments, in particular while performing mobile device testing.
